Aldenham & Patchetts Green
This locality is situated in Watford, a town located in Hertfordshire, North of Greater London. The neighbourhood has Harrow to its South East, Barnet to its West and St Albans to its North East. Furthermore Watford is well connected to three main roads: the M1, the A41 and the A405. Compared to inner city London, Watford is surrounded by open green fields and parks, much of this being attributed to the Greater London Green Belt. Watford has quite an extensive rail network and it takes around half-an-hour to get to London Euston by train.
Watford’s first railway station was opened in 1837 on the St Albans road, however this closed around 20 years later, but a larger one was reopened in Watford Juction. By 1871 the town’s population increased to around 12,000 people. Watford was gradually becoming a residential area and people gained access to schools and local shops. The Public Libraries Act was adopted by the town in 1871 and in 1873 the Watford public library was officially opened. In 1891 Watford’s population stood at a staggering 17,063 leading to land being developed for housing purposes. It is estimated that the current Watford population stands at around 95,000.
Watford’s The One Bell pub, opposite St Mary’s Church, holds the oldest existing pub license in England dating back to 1750. Watford’s 1837 old rail station still exists and is currently listed as a Grade-II building.
Local Councillor, Amanda Grimston, has claimed her constituents who live in Meriden estate are being let down as Watford Police focus their efforts in Watford Town Centre and consequently neglect Meriden estate.
Watford Council has an annual housing development target of 783 homes, with proposals focusing on sites of key value such as Watford Junction. Oxhey Park was also refurbished and modernised, opening its new facilities in 2020 following a £3.75 million investment in the development of new park facilities and a community centre that houses a cafe, community rooms and sporting facilities for local residents to enjoy. The council is also set to invest £375,000 in the nearby South Oxhey Playing Fields to repair and improve its facilities.
