Ashford
The neighbourhood of Ashford is a popular suburban village located in Middlesex. Serviced by South Western Railways via the Ashford Rail Station, many families in the locality commute into central London for work. While many of the homes are non-descript post-war houses, they are affordable and spacious. There are also some gems in the area, like the Tudor-style houses spotted along the lush winding roads. Residents in the area love the community feeling, and are able to participate in meetings and village events at the Fordbridge Community Centre. However, just because the neighbourhood caters towards families, doesn’t mean it’s a bore. If stopping by on a weekend, you’ll find locals singing their hearts out at Kings Head’s karaoke night, and others feasting on delicious pub food at The Ash Tree pub. For anyone in search of a quiet but affordable suburb, Ashford is a wonderful choice.
Ashford was originally a small area served by a number of churches. The multiple churches of different Christian sects helped the area develop into a thriving village at the end of the 19th century. Later on, when the Windsor branch of the South Western Railway arrived at Ashford station in 1911, the area grew even further. This also led to the establishment of the multiple schools in the neighbourhood such as Spelthorne Council School, Ashford County School, and Welsh Girls’ School. To serve the community, a firehouse and movie theatre known as Clarendon Cinema were erected. Today, many of these buildings no longer exist - but some of the area’s historical character can be experienced through many of the locality’s remaining architectural details.
Olympian, Sarah Ayton, grew up in the Ashton neighbourhood. She was part of the sailing team that won England a gold medal at the Beijing Olympics.
Despite having a bustling high street, Ashton lacks the concentration of independent shops that other local parts of town offer. Still, families in the area don’t mind this, and are happy to shop at the affordable chain options in the neighbourhood.
