Borough Green
East of the nearby town of Sevenoaks and west of Maidstone sits the village and civil parish of Borough Green, Kent. With a prolific history spanning thousands of years, it’s rolling countryside vistas, and proximity to nearby major transport hubs - Borough Green has long maintained its highly sought after status, with the area being the locus of many recent housing developments!
It’s thought that human occupation of the local area of Borough Green stretches back thousands of years; even as far back as the Paleolithic era, with evidence of a hill fort dated from 100 BC found at nearby Oldbury Hill! The Romans were definitely here also - as in 1839 several cineary urns were found in Barrow Field, and in 1899 even more funerary Roman urns were found in the Borough Green locale! Whilst its not entirely certain where the name ‘Borough Green’ comes from, it did have several spellings over the centuries, from ‘Barrow Green’ to ‘Boroe Green’, and could link to the area as being a sight of refuge, or a potential recreation ground for the nearby hamlets and parishes. As a stopping place for many travellers; the area was historically proliferated with inns and public houses, and nearby Wrotham has a pub which is nearly 700 years old!
Although historic; much of Borough Green’s development occurred in the late 19th century coinciding with the completion of the new railway station. In 1919 the Crow Hill Estate was developed, and in the post-war period the Tollgate and Fairfield estates were also developed to encourage movement to the area. Nowadays, the population of Borough Green is over 4,000!
Borough Green is a part of the Tonbridge and Malling District Council (TMDC). Whilst a small village; Borough Green’s development history has spanned over the past two-hundred years, and is still a vital area for urban development. In a landmark proposition, the TMDC are proposing to utilise the Downs greenspace near Borough Green, firmly an area within the Kent Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, in order to create swathes of new housing (affordable and luxury) within the Borough Green locale! Although, this is in the development stage and consultations are still underway.
