Brixton Hill

This neighbourhood is located in south London and is known as Brixton Hill. It is just south of Brixton town centre in the Borough of Lambeth. The area is a vibrant hub of eclectic shops, bars and eateries that offer a mixture of Caribbean, West Indian, African and Asian influences. The neighbourhood has a gritty industrial feel, with lots of clubs and music venues for those who are interested in nightlife. Although Brixton Hill is at the end of the Victoria line, it guarantees a seat in morning rush hour, and only takes 10 minutes to reach central London, putting residents in an excellent location.

The northern section of Brixton Hill Road was formerly called Brixton Cause Way and dates back to the 11th century. It was part of a Roman road that led south from the capital of Londinium. Fast forward to the 19th century and this road was once again part of technological achievements. An experimental telegraph apparatus was set up here in 1815, and it was commemorated in classic British style- a pub opened with the name ‘The Telegraph’ to memorialise the event.

Danny Kirwan, a British singer and songwriter, was born and raised close to the neighbourhood. Kirwan is best known as being a member of Fleetwood Mac and even went on to have a few solo albums. Sharon Osbourne, born Sharon Rachel Levy, was also born close by. The daughter of a music promotor and manager, she grew up surrounded by music and musicians, especially in Brixton. Sharon is most known for managing Ozzy Osbourne’s music career, shortly after which the pair began dating and were later married.

The granite and stone monument that marks the entrance to St. Matthew’s garden has stood there for nearly 200 years. It is a lavish memorial to the Richard Budd, who was a prominent business man from the area and was erected and commissioned by his son.

The club Electric Brixton was once known as The Fridge. In the early 80s, The Fridge was at the heart of the New Romantic movement and booked artists like Boy George and Frankie Goes to Hollywood.

The larger area of Brixton, and its main centre, have a reputation for a higher rate of crime compared to the rest of London. However, residents report that Brixton Hill has a bit of a slower pace than the lively centre, so crime is lower away from the bars and clubs. Additionally, many residents report feeling perfectly safe and comfortable there.

Developer Muse has been working on a number of projects in the Brixton area, in partnership with Lambeth Council. As part of their town hall regeneration initiative, for which Muse has already refurbished Lambeth’s Grade II listed Town Hall and locally listed Ivor House, a redevelopment of the former Council offices on Brixton Hill is also beign undertaken, with the aim of delivering neccessary residences and new public administrative spaces. The offices will be demolished and in their place a new seven-storey building (including basement) overlooking Rush Common will be built. It will comprise a total of 74 new residential homes; 44 private and 30 affordable, ranging from 1, 2 and 3 bedroom units. Additionally, the ground floor and basement will be home to the new London Borough of Lambeth archive. The development is expected to be completed in 2023. Residents should continue to see continual growth and new builds in the area in the coming years.
