Broomfield

On the northern edge of the central hub of Chelmsford sits the village suburb of Broomfield. Now known for its large hospital dating from 1940 - the area of Broomfield has an incredibly rich history, dating back to well before the 1086 Domesday Book! This area’s housing type is varied and broad; from detached 1960s suburban properties, terraced townhouses and bungalows - ranging from £200,000 to £600,000!

Broomfield’s history is ancient, long, and storied. In 1888 when digging a gravel pit, workers uncovered a 7th century burial site! This highlights that the area was definitely settled between the 5-7th centuries, however other archaeological evidence found Bronze Age tools and flints; dating the settlement even further back. The ancient burial site has been likened in scope to the findings at Sutton Hoo, and many of the tools are on display at the British Museum! It was first recorded as ‘Brumfelda’ in the 1086 Domesday Book survey for William the Conquerer, and the Church of St Mary dates back to the 11th century also. The village enjoyed a rural existence up until the 1940s, with the construction of the Broomfield Hospital, which initially treated tuberculosis patients. The hospital has since expanded, and is a key employer in the area, servicing a huge portion of the Chelmsford and wider Essex locale.

In 1981, Broomfield became the site of meteorological history; as the site of one of the largest hurricane outbreaks in the whole of European recorded history!

Although Broomfield is technically a village, its contemporary status as a suburb of Chelmsford means that development in the area is more common than in other villages throughout the Essex county. Its proximity to both Chelmsford’s centre and the Broomfield Hospital make it a much sought-after location. However, Broomfield sits on a firm conservation area; which covers locales such as the Church Green, churchyard, and its surrounding buildings. Whilst the conservation area is still in effect, the Chelmsford Council has identified Broomfield as one of the allocated areas for development in the 2023 Local Plan, with 450 mixed-use dwellings to the constructed north of Broomfield!
