Chafford

Chafford Hundred is located north-west of Grays, south-east of South Ockendon and located in the Borough of Thurrock as well as the London Borough of Havering. Chafford Hundred is recognised for its curved pavements and its detached post-war homes which represent a quintessential suburban town. Its image of suburbia is furthered by its proximity to vast open green spaces such as Chafford Gorges Nature Reserve. The area has a railway station which can get one to London Liverpool street in around 45 minutes.

Chafford Hundred is in the administrative centre of Thurrock. The area’s history is tied with the industrial history of chalk production that occurred in the town. Furthermore, agriculture was a large part of the 11th century Chafford economy, and it was noted as one of the large marshland sheep pastures in the Domesday national audit. In 1086 Chafford Hundred contained around 16 distinct villages, most of which gave their names to the parishes of this neighbourhood.

An out of school day care company, Mega Camps, has been praised by Ofsted after receiving an “inadequate” rating in 2018. Chafford Gorges Nature Reserve offers 200 acres of green space with numerous animals and wildlife living.

The rate of unemployment in Chafford Hundred exceeds that of the national average.

As Havering Council’s parking revenue has increase, local residents have complained at the overbearing costs of owning a car in the Council.

New developments around the Lakeside Shopping Centre will see access to Chafford Hundred rail station dramatically improved along with 3000 houses and additional retail, leisure and green spaces.
