The neighbourhood area boasts local shopping facilities with Lewisham Shopping centre located in it. South East Lewisham offers an authentic taste of South East London, with quieter residential homes in the areas such as Blackheath or Chinbrook, yet a faster pace of life in Lewisham & Heather Green.
Lewisham history began with the Anglo Saxons after it was named, Levesham, deriving its name from ‘leswes’ or ‘leves’ which means town, village, ham or pastures. Hither Green was said to be named as such because it was closer to Lewisham than Further Green. The first houses in Hither Green were built in the 18th century and a train station opened in 1895, the crux of Britain’s industrial revolution. Blackheath is an interesting part of Lewisham due to its geographical and mythical morbid history. Supposedly named Blackheath due to being used as a mass burial site during the Black Death.
However, scholars refute this urban myth and argue it is named as such due to the areas dark soil. Blackheath’s high topography made it a useful area for military invasions and internal rebellions with its height being used for both defence and launching attacks on British soil.
Former Tottenham Manager, Harry Redknapp originally resided in Lewisham. Lewisham has Europe’s largest police station, equipped with their own stables!
The locality unfortunately has high violent crime rates, and it is no surprise that Lewisham is also one of the most deprived areas in the UK, ranking 31st most deprived out of 326 local authorities in England.
Former Lewisham and Southwark College, will now become two separate geographical entities, allowing for investment in area specific course creation for the Further Education Colleges. In addition, Lewisham Council have drafted a proposal regeneration charter to include residents in the planning process for future housing developments. The new Arcane Mews development is an example of a scheme which has been a part of this charter. Set to be completed later in 2022 this development is typically suburban and comprises eight 3-storey three-bedroom houses with off-street parking and private gardens.
