Chiswick

This western part of Chiswick sits along the River Thames and is home to multiple businesses that take full advantage of their scenic location. Wandering along the river, it’s hard to decide where to stop first. A favourite among locals would have to be The City Barge, where they can grab a pint while looking out onto the Thames. There’s more to the neighbourhood than its prime riverfront location though. Most residents were drawn to the neighbourhood for its charming village feel, and beautiful Victorian and Edwardian homes. The area also boasts lively independent eateries like Yupas Thai, as well as the beautiful Chiswick Gardens with historical monuments like the Classic Bridge and Ionic Temple. While the neighbourhood might not be all that affordable - home to many celebrities and wealthy retirees - it’s still surely worth a visit!

Grove Park dates back to the 15th century, when the famous Grove House stood at the centre of the neighbourhood. Later on, in 1833, the Duke of Devonshire purchased the house and estate. It wasn’t until the arrival of the railway in 1849 that the area grew into a sizeable residential settlement though. By 1928, Grove House had been replaced by the Kinnaird Park estate. A slew of semi-detached houses were built throughout the 1930s in order to house workers in the area. Today, many of the large homes have been replaced by flats and smaller houses.

Famous athlete, Jack Beresford (1899-1977), lived in the neighbourhood. He’s most well-known for winning three gold medals for rowing at the Olympic Games between 1924 and 1936.

Chiswick station is only serviced by South Western Railways. Unfortunately, this railway company has been infamous recently for its service delays. Still, many residents have their own cars - and don’t mind driving to their destinations in the area, and the neighbourhood has great bus connections.

The Quintin Boat Club, that sits right by the Chiswick Bridge, underwent a major renovation project that was just recently completed in 2022. As a part of a £10 million investment, a large riverside sports complex was built constructed and it now offers safe and secure storage for more than double the number of boats. Aside from ensuring that the current boathouse is upgraded, this project brought a facility for rugby as well as studio spaces to the area.
