Claremont

The Claremont area of Surrey is an idyllic suburban neighbourhood. Aside from the gorgeous single family homes, lawns and mansions - the neighbourhood also boasts multiple golf courses and the stunning Claremont Landscape Gardens. There’s more to the area than just its picturesque outdoor facilities though. The neighbourhood has a bustling high street lined with quaint shops and businesses like ABC Music, Everyman Cinema, and the Buds and Blooms florist. For those looking to soak up the area’s interesting history, there’s even the locally run Elmbridge Museum, packed with the stories of the neighbourhood. Even if Claremont is out of reach when it comes to housing budget, it’s surely still worth a visit for a day strolling through its welcoming streets.

Claremont Landscape Gardens is an important feature in the community. The gardens date back to 1709, when well known architect, Sir John Vanbrugh, bought the land in hope of developing a garden retreat. By 1714, the gardens had already been sold to the Duke of Newcastle though. The Duke worked with designer Charles Bridgeman to refine the gardens, adding a turf amphitheatre to it. Later on in the 19th century, the site became a royal home - housing Princess Charlotte and Prince Leopold. After WWI though, there was little excuse to keep such a large site so underutilised. In 1922, a good portion of the land was sold and converted into housing and schools for the neighbourhood. The National Trust now runs the 49 acres of remaining land.

In the early 20th century, the Claremont and Esher areas were the sites of very active Suffragette protests. Some areas of the neighbourhood were even damaged during burnings.

Since the Claremont area is pretty upscale, many of the mansions are set back from the street and shielded with large fences. This can detract from the otherwise quaint suburban feel. Still, the fences provide privacy for these homeowners and only really impact certain sections.

Given the exclusivity and desirablility of Claremont, there are few large-scale developments taking place in the area. However, it’s also no surprise that developers are looking for any small pockets where they can increase the number of high quality homes. William George Homes has recently completed the St. George’s Heights development. This project has bought 7 two-bedroom flats and one three-bedroom penthouse to the neighbourhood. All luxury apartments, they’ll each have access to beautifully landscaped communal gardens.
