Clem Attlee Court & Dawes Road
This part of Fulham is a peaceful metropolitan neighbourhood that gives Londoners the best of both the suburban and urban worlds. The area is popular amongst not just families, but also younger Londoners drawn to the beautiful architecture and plethora of greenery. Most streets in the neighbourhood are lined with large Victorian brick houses, many of which have their own outdoor space. For those residents who don’t have private gardens though, there is the large Lillie Road Recreation Ground that many residents rely on for replenishing jogs and strolls. Children in the neighbourhood benefit from the many fantastic educational facilities, like Sir John Lillie Primary School, and locals are also spoiled by the wonderful food and drink establishments. Whether it’s a wood-fired pizza at The Rylston, a Sunday Roast at The Wellington, or a round of pints at The Bedford Arms - there’s something for everyone in Fulham!
Fulham dates back to 704AD when the Bishop of London formed his manor there. By the 14th century, the area had grown into a small village - with shops and homes. Throughout the medieval times, the villages expanded with many wealthy Londoners using their homes in the area as retreats. It wasn’t until the 19th century though, that industry arrived in the neighbourhood, bringing with it workers and residents from the inner city. During the time between the two wars, much of the housing that was built in the area catered towards working-class Londoners. Following the Second World War, the council built large housing estates in the neighbourhood, in order to respond to the shortage caused by air raid damage. Today, the area has largely shed its 20th century working-class reputation, and is now a rather desirable London neighbourhood.
Famous actor, Daniel Radcliffe, grew up in the neighbourhood. He’s most well- known for his role as Harry Potter in the 8-part film series.
Unfortunately, this part of Fulham does not have its own tube station. Still, residents don’t find any issue in their short walks to any of the nearby stations at Parsons Green or Fulham Broadway.
The borough of Hammersmith and Fulham recently completed an affordable housing development at Mo Mowlam House on the Clem Attlee Estate site. Thirty new affordable homes for local residents and a new centre for the charity Action on Disability were officially opened in March 2022. Eighteen of the new flats are offered at social rent prices, and the remaining twelve offer shared ownership. Three of the units are accessible for Disabled people. The scheme forms part of the council’s programme to build another 3,000 new homes over the next eight years with 60 per cent classified as genuinely affordable.
