Colindale & The Hyde

Located just to the north of Hendon and to the west of the M1, this suburban neighbourhood consists of Colindale and The Hyde, and is situated in northwest London in the Borough of Barnet. The area has undergone major regeneration and housing development in recent years, but many of its original Edwardian terraces, 1930s semis, and 1970s private and council flats remain throughout its leafy streets. Bustling Edgware Road runs through this neighbourhood, and is filled with local shops and restaurants, like Jakarta, an award-winning Indonesian, Thai and Malaysian restaurant, and Cafe Anglais, which provides British ingredients and is independently owned by locals. The neighbourhood is also surrounded by green spaces, including West Hendon Playing Field, Rushgrove Park, Fryent Country Park, and the Brent Reservoir, footpaths and trails, as well as a few boating activities. This locality is a great choice for professionals who want new properties at a lower price and for those who want to get away from the business of central London while remaining just a quick tube ride away.

The area of Colindale has had a long association with aeronautics. In 1911 Airco started manufacturing aircraft at Annesley Avenue and pilot training began throughout the locality. After the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, local aircraft manufacturing and associate industries began to increase. After its establishment in 1918, the Royal Air Force flew from Hendon aerodrome, which the government acquired in 1925. During the Second World War the aerodrome became a transport, communications and training base, but its unsuitability for post-war jet aircraft meant that the last flying units left in 1957. The RAF Museum opened on the base in 1972, in two of the aerodrome’s original hangers, which have been supplemented since by other exhibition halls and can still be visited today.

Interestingly, the local street Aerodrome Road was built during the First World War by German prisoners of war!

Until the 1960s there used to be bomb shelters at the bottom of the playing fields of schools in the area.

One of the downsides of this neighbourhood is that there is not a wealth of entertainment options. There are a few good local restaurants, but one must travel a bit to find more options such as theatres. However, with all of the development that has occurred, it is likely that this will be remedied in the coming years.

Colindale has recently been identified as an area for growth by the local council. The plan sets out a goal of at least 10,000 new homes by 2036, as well plenty of new mixed-use developments and new economic activity, created in the form of ground floor commercial frontage. Colindale Gardens, an ongoing development by Redrow in the area, is a highly ambitious multi-phase development intending to deliver 4,100 new homes to the area. Set across 47 acres, a fifth of the land in this new neighbourhood is dedicated to open green spaces for residents and the surrounding community to enjoy, including communal gardens, cycle-paths, walkways, and attractive landscaping. All residents of the newly launched homes will also have access to a 24-hour concierge and outdoor play areas and exercise equipment. While the project is not fully completed, apartments are being released to the public market in batches, with a recent launch of 56 apartments in April 2022.
