Colne Valley Regional Park & Denham Golf Club

The Colne Valley Regional Park lies at the edge of Greater London, to the west of Harefield (which is separated from the area by the River Colne and Savay Lake) and north of Uxbridge. It is bordered by both the M25 and M40, and forms a key part of the Green Belt. The area has two main settlements, Denham to the south and Denham Green at the centre of the area, the latter of which is connected to the Chiltern Railways network. These small, clustered garden villages are formed of interwar houses, each with a few eateries and other businesses such as plant nurseries and veterinarians.

Around the villages are several golf courses and parkland, with lush greenery around the river and lake, as well as large expanses of farmland. Some industrial plants are located just outside Denham Green, such as Bosch’s UK Head Office and IHG. The dominant feature to the north is Denham Aerodrome, which is a flight school in addition to being a helicopter maintenance facility and general aerodrome.

St. Mary’s Church, located in Denham, has a flint and stone Norman tower, showing the age of the settlement. Other old buildings in the area include the Old Bakery on the High Street, dating back to the 14th century.
Denham Film Studios used to be based in the area, and many films were shot in the locality, such as The Thief of Baghdad, Hamlet and Great Expectations. The studio closed in 1952 and its buildings were demolished in 1981.

Roger Moore, famous for playing James Bond after Sean Connery from 1973 to 1985, lived in Sherwood House for a period of time. The actor starred in seven James Bond films, including Live and Let Die, Moonraker and For Your Eyes Only. He was also engaged in charity work, being appointed as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in 1991. Moore passed away in Switzerland in 2017, aged 89.

Being right next to the Aerodrome, the area does get some noise from aircraft. In addition, two major motorways, as well as some industry, are located in the area. However, there are also enough green spaces and lush greenery in general to be able to escape from such noise.

While being on the Green Belt, Denham has also seen some developments in recent years, noticeably the redevelopment of Denham Film Studios into new luxury flats. With planning applications increasing in the area, residents and locals have shared their concerns over construction densification in the Parish, loss of Green Belt land, and the potential expansion of Heathrow Airport. Denham Parish Council, in response, released the Denham Parish Neighbourhood Plan (2020-2036), which aims to control development and residential densification in the area, and direct proposals in ways that benefit the local community and protect its semi-rural village atmosphere.
