Copse Hill & Cottenham Park

This neighbourhood area is located in Merton, South West London. It includes areas such as Copse Hill, Cottenham Park and Merton Park. Residents who live in this neighbourhood are blessed to have an array of local parks near them such as Wimbledon Common or Cannizaro Park. Wimbledon is one of the wealthiest areas in London with some of South London’s most expensive houses. Despite this, there is still a strong sense of community. For example local pub, The Alexandra, invites residents to eat for free each week to help prevent loneliness. This area has great transport links with the A3 main road that can take people to Clapham or train journeys that can take one to London Waterloo in around 30 minutes.

Wimbledon’s short distance to central London attracted middle-class families to settle in this suburban area during the 17th century. Robert Bell, a Merchant of the East India Company and a British Diplomat was one of these and built Eagle House in 1613. Eagle House was a grand house passing through many hands and uses, even becoming a school in 1787. Wimbledon Central sits within the Wimbledom Parliamentary Constituency. This was created in 1885 and since this date it has elected Conservative MPs except for a total of 13 years where Labour candidates won the seat.

Wimbledon College is a Roman Catholic 11-19 school that has been teaching local boys since 1892.

Wimbledon Centre Court has come under criticism for only providing 28 wheelchair spaces, compared to the 120 that a stadium of its size is recommended to provide.

In 2019, a husband and wife opened a zero waste supermarket in Merton Abbey Mills and business seems to going swimmingly!

A few years back, residents were angry that the proposal to develop a new Harris Academy Wimbledon was approved despite high levels of air pollution in the proposed site. The school was recently opened and features state of the art facilities to ensure students can enjoy an extensive and varied curriculum up to A level.
