East Becontree

This part of Dagenham is easily accessed via the Underground at Dagenham Heathway Station. With its convenient transport connections, it’s become a popular suburb for commuting families in search of affordable real estate. Aside from the rows of inexpensive post-war terraced houses, families are also drawn to the area for its gorgeous and historical Parsloes Park, that was once a part of a manor. Children in the neighbourhood, when not running around the park, are likely attending the well-reviewed Sydney Russell School. Families also take full advantage of the wide range of food offerings in the area. From the delicious African food at Squires to the Indian food at Royal Bengali, it’s easy to see why so many families have chosen to make the move.

Parsloes Park was once the site of the Manor of Parsloes back in the 13th century. After passing through many different hands, the land was sold to the Fanshawe family in the 1600s. The family stayed there until they ran into debt in the 1800s, leading to their leasing of the property to new tenants. While their beautiful manor house has since been demolished, their wonderful art collection can still be viewed at the nearby Valence House. The land was later converted into a park in 1935. Today, much of its original layout still exists.

Dagenham Heathway station gets twice the number of passengers as nearby Dagenham East per year. This is especially interesting considering that the Dagenham Heathway station is significantly smaller.

There aren’t many quaint period houses in the neighbourhood that other parts of outer London boast. Still, residents enjoy great affordability with their modest post-war terraced houses.

The Borough of Barking and Dagenham is working on major community infrastructure improvements. Parsloes Park in 2019 received the green light to undergo a £7 million revamp. The funds include £1 million provided by the local council. The works would involve knocking down the single-storey pavilion in the park and building a gym, new changing rooms and studio in its place. Three 3G sports pitches would also be created. Works are now underway and hopes are high as the park finally sees promises of its enhancement come to life!
