East Chiswick
Chiswick is a popular outer London suburb filled with beautiful parks and Victorian terraced houses. Situated along the Thames River, residents are spoiled by all that the area has to offer. Locals take great pride in the number of historical buildings in the area, like the Chiswick House and Hogarth’s House. However, it’s the area’s greenery that really seems to draw in crowds. From the stunningly landscaped Chiswick Gardens and Dukes Meadows, to the small island of Chiswick Eyot, there are plenty of places to soak in the neighbourhood’s crisp, fresh air. After being so active outside, you can find many residents on a tour of the historically family run Fuller’s Brewery or a pint at many of the riverside pubs. For those visiting the area, they’ll find that even if they’re not looking for a lengthy brewery tour, their variety of ales are sure to impress. With all that’s going on in the neighbourhood, it’s no surprise that Chiswick is so popular amongst both families and young professional.
The neighbourhood is well known for being home to the famous Hogarth House. The house dates back to the 18th century, when artist, William Hogarth, wanted a summer home with his wife. They built the house in an orchard at the edge of Chiswick Common Field. Once he died, he was actually buried nearby at St. Nicholas churchyard, with an epitaph by famous playwright and friend, David Garrick. After this point, the house continued to be used by his surviving family members. By 1900, though, the family had to put the house up for sale. Lieutenant- Colonel Robert Shipway bought and restored the home, opening it up to public visitors in 1904. Since then, the house has been restored many times and is now grade I-listed.
The Fuller’s Brewery is London’s only traditional family brewery that’s still in business. The brewery has been in operation for over 350 years.
The Great West Road bisects this part of the neighbourhood. Unfortunately, since it is a busy thoroughfare, it can make the area feel a bit polluted, loud and chaotic. Still, residents don’t mind this and find that the plethora of green spaces and recreational facilities help maintain the area’s serenity.
Chiswick is a desirable area for Londoners in search of more green space. Knowing that, it’s no surprise that developers are constantly looking for ways to invest more in the neighbourhood. Berkeley Homes recently launched the Chiswick Gate development. The collection of stunning apartments and town houses are situated around a landscaped garden. The residents also benefit from a shared gym, garage and concierge. In 2021, a massive development proposed for the B&Q site near Chiswick Roundabout was also granted approval by Hounslow council’s planning committee. The development will include five buildings in the development, including one hotel and three residential blocks, linked by a three-level podium and arranged around a public square (Hudson Square) in the centre. Despite objections to the development by locals, between 15-25 technology companies are expected to occupy the development, bringing in some big business in the proces to the area.
