East Wallington & South Beddington

This part of Beddington is on the quieter side, with fewer businesses and shops lining the streets compared to other neighbouring Sutton villages. The area attracts families who want both affordable homes and sizeable outdoor space. Their children have plenty of local schools to choose from, including Holy Trinity C of Junior School. If exploring on a weekend, a wander through the historic Bandon Hill Cemetery is a must, followed by some sweets from Niki M Cakes. Many families in the area flock to LCCA Cricket Centre for matches and also their youth empowerment charity events. Despite the area’s sleepy vibes, it’s easy to understand the draw that families have to this tight knit community.

Bandon Hill Methodist Church is a historical focal point within the community. It dates back to 1895, when it consisted of just two ground floor rooms, and a congregation of about 30 people. By 1904, the congregation had grown enough that it was able to move buildings into the Wheelwright’s Shop. In 1913, a proper church opened for them at the corner of Beddington Grove and Sandy Lane. The church quickly expanded, and from 1927-1929, the property even had its own tennis court! Throughout the Second World War, the buildings were used as a welfare centre for infants. Following the war, the church struggled to stay a float, but today it’s going strong.

Famous musician Jeff Beck used to live in the neighbourhood at 206 Demesne Road. He’s most well known for playing the guitar as a part of the band The Yardbirds.

In contrast to many other quaint London suburbs, this neighbourhood is lacking in its own parade of independent eateries and shops. While there are some businesses in the area, it is largely residential.

The LCCA Cricket Centre is also home to the Change Foundation, a charity that uses sports and dance to help young people. The charity in the recent past received funding from the Postcode Community Trust to launch their Boxing 4 Change programme. This programme provided free boxing coaching and community oriented group activities for troubled youth between the ages of 16-21.

The borough of Sutton was identified as an Opportunity Area by the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan. Wallington, adjacent to South Beddington, has been categorised as a District Town Centre in the Mayor’s plans. The Opportunity Plans include the regeneration and enhancement of Sutton Town Centre as well as the development of a new London Cancer Hub, which could generate c.80,000 sqm of laboratories, business and academic buildings, amenity facilities and hotel accommodation, set within an outstanding public realm. While many of the interventions have not been detailed and finalised, with many of these initiatives project to be completed for 2035, it’s clear that the area will see some changes in the coming years.
