Eastbury

This neighbourhood area is located to the northeast of Northwood, known as Eastbury. It is helmed in by two golf courses to the north and south, by the Metropolitan tube line to the west, and by Oxhey Wood forest to the east. The area predominantly consists of suburban houses laid out along fairly straight (though not grid-like) tree-lined roads, turning into cul-de-sacs and other isolated sanctuaries. While the area is very leafy, with each household having space in their front porches and back lawns, there are also a few open spaces – particularly around the Frithwood Primary School to the south (with Frithwood Park) and Eastbury Farm Primary School to the north (with Eastbury Play Area). At the very south of the area lies Northwood underground station, which provides quick access to central London. St. Helen’s School is located here.

Situated just south of Eastbury Farm Primary School and bordering Oxhey Wood lies Northwood Headquarters. Prior to this, however, the land was home to Eastbury Park (not to be confused with a similar-named estate in Dorset). The house was designed in Scottish Baronial style for David Carnegie by David Bryce, an architect from Edinburgh. It was later sold to the RAF for use as an officers’ mess. It was destroyed by a fire on 20th February 1969.

St. Helen’s School is an independent girl’s school which works in collaboration with the nearby Merchant Taylor’s School. Much like the latter institution, the school has produced many successful alumni. These include Luisa Baldini, a news reporter who has worked in channels such as EuroNews and the BBC; Caroline Daniel, an editor of FT Weekend; Magenta Devine, a TV presenter at the BBC, as well as Penny Johnson CBE, who is the Director of the Government Art Collection.

The Northwood Headquarters is surrounded by barbed wire and a ring of trees, encompassing five military operational HQs; the Joint Forced Command HQ, the Permanent Joint Headquarters, the Joint Forces HQ, the Commander Naval Forces North as well as the Headquarters of Commander-in-Chief Fleet.

The headquarters hosts a variety of operations, including Operation Active Endeavour, which aims to prevent a terrorist strike at sea or via ships; Operation Ocean Shield is of a similar nature, attempting to stop pirates off the coast of Somalia from raiding commercial ships – altogether staff from all around the world monitor the safety of more than 55,000 ships.

Eastbury is a pleasant suburb, with lots of space for children and families. However, there is a lack of commercial stores or other amenities in the immediate area, and in some areas the tube station can be far away. Furthermore, Northwood Headquarters brings in more traffic than would be expected in other areas (though a lot of the staff stay nearby). At the same time, the HQ brings with it improved facilities and schools.

As far as development is concerned, Transport for London is planning to use its land assets around Northwood station as one of three test development sites under the TfL Property Partnerships Scheme. The car park around the station will be redeveloped to provide 128 new residential units as well as new commercial space, a step-free railway station and a new piazza. A small housing development was also completed in late 2022 and is located near Murray Road. The scheme comprises 4 luxury 5-bedroom houses which are accessible through a private drive named Blackbird Lane. The rest of the neighbourhood is largely protected from development as the majority of the western and northern portions are covered by greenbelt restrictions. To the south sits the beloved Ruislip Lido. Unfortunately, even though Hillingdon Council unveiled plans as long ago as 2010 to test and improve the water quality to permit swimming, this is still yet to be achieved.
