Edenbridge

Nestled on the banks of the River Eden, in the far eastern edge of the Sevenoaks District, sits the town and civil parish of Edenbridge. With a storied and rich history stretching back centuries - from the Roman roads to the medieval taverns and luxurious gardens - Edenbridge maintains its quaint idyllicism well into the 21st century. Owing to its combination of pastoral tranquility and proximity to major transport hubs; Edenbridge is highly sought after and affluent, with large country manor houses on offer in excess of £2 million!

The first settlers surrounding the River Eden were the Celtic Cantii tribe; who settled in Kent around 200 BC - 200 years before the arrival of the Romans in Britain. The Cantii are where we get the modern term Kent (meaning ‘edge’) - as it was referred to as Cantium by the Romans, and ‘Cent’ in Old English. Edenbridge was first recorded in the 12th century however, as ‘Eadhelmsbrigge’. As such, there are several medieval buildings still standing in Edenbridge today, including the 11-12th century Church of St Peter and St Paul which in 1909 received stained glass windows from famed artist Edward Burne-Jones! Owing to its location near the River Eden, most of Edenbridge’s industrial and production history has been tied the proliferation of water mills in the area; all of which are now in disuse.

Although rooted in ancient history and dotted with medieval buildings; Edenbridge also has contemporary developments. In the 1950s and 60s, the London County Council constructed the Stangrove Estate; a vast modernist housing estate in the heart of Edenbridge that has since become of the most ideal places to live in Edenbridge!

Sevenoaks District Council is currently still preparing their district wide local plan which will guide smaller authorities to craft their own neighbourhood plans. The Edenbridge Town Council’s draft plan focuses heavily on maintaining the heritage of the area; and boosting the high-street economy. However, it is hard to say whether imminent housing development is coming to the Edenbridge locale. Although, a recent large-scale luxury development is currently underway in Edenbridge. Known as ‘Hilders Farm’, this gated community complex is aiming to deliver 10 new large-scale residential houses at prices over £1 million!
