Fortune Green & Finchley Road
This neighbourhood is situated in the London Borough of Camden, to the west of rugged Hampstead Heath. It is known locally as Fortune Green, because of the small park in the area. The neighbourhood has a great sense of community, with residents extremely involved in local issues. It also offers many restaurants, including The Cedar, which was voted best takeaway in London in 2014, and the Alice House, a popular date night pub and restaurant. This area is largely populated with mature professionals and families with children who come to enjoy a quieter lifestyle, but still want excellent transport links into central London.
The first recorded mention of Fortune Green was in 1646 when it was originally four acres, about twice its current size. In 1891, the Green was put up for sale for development. Local residents who did not want to see it developed formed the Fortune Green Preservation Society to prevent it from being sold off. They fought the sale in court, but unfortunately the judge allowed the sale to proceed. Not admitting defeat, the residents managed to persuade the Council to buy the Green and pay for most of the sale cost. They raised the rest of the money through donations. By December 1896, the residents had saved Fortune Green, which can still be enjoyed today.
Hampstead Cemetery, located in the neighbourhood, has run out of grave spaces. There are an estimated 60,000 people buried there, including Sir Joseph Rotblat. Rotblat was a Polish physicist who worked on the Manhattan Project, but later received the Nobel Peace Prize for working to diminish and eliminate nuclear arms’ presence in international affairs.
Theft is the highest reported crime in this area. Recently, there has been a rise of burglaries targeting businesses in the area. Even so, police have responded quickly and increased the number of patrols, especially at night.
West Hampstead, just south of Fortune Green, is experiencing a bit of a development boom. West Hampstead Central is a new development in the area consisting of 94 one and two bedroom apartments in a contemporary building that rises five floors above ground level. The Artisan is another development characterised by its boutique collection of 31 homes. It is noteworthy that the community in this neighbourhood is very involved - they even have an online forum to discuss planned future developments.
