Furzehill Road

Traversed by the busy Furzehill Road, the southern half of Borehamwood is neatly enclosed by the Barnet By-Pass and the A411. Postwar semi-detached red brick houses with lovely reared gardens outline the plethora of public parks where residents walk their dogs and play sports. Although Borehamwood is part of the commuter belt due to the presence of Elstree and Borehamwood station, the town has its own strong sense of individual community. The Hertsmere and Borehamwood industrial parks, the nearby TV and film studios and popular Borehamwood shopping park sustains a strong local economy. All of this combines to give Borehamwood the perfect balance of countryside tranquillity and modern convenience.

A history of Borehamwood has to centre around the development of British film and TV, which really kicked off around the 1920s. The broader Borehamwood and Elstree area was in fact even called “the British Hollywood” for a time. Many classics have been made in the area, including Dr Zhivago (1965), 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) and even the Indiana Jones trilogy. However, lights and celebrities aside, the actual population of Borehamwood really only began in the post war years. Several council homes were built for displaced Londoners, finally making it the suburban residential community is it today.

Borehamwood is not only home to numerous pioneering film studios, but also the HQ of the much-loved pizza chain Pizza Hut.

The key issues that plague residents of Borehamwood currently are related to the encroaching development on the protected Green Belt, as well as the maintenance of local public healthcare and education.

The wider area around Borehamwood is undergoing a few developments, such as a new 850-home community on the outskirts of Borehamwood which will include a country park, and additional teaching space for the local college. While many residents oppose new housing in the area, there has been enthusiasm surrounding these new educational facilities, with locals demanding a guarantee that plans for a new primary school will be confirmed if these new homes are to be built.
