In 1778 Daniel Defoe described Watford as a general market town, with one very long high street. Watford was known for its agricultural history, containing many active cotton mills during the industrial revolution. Local Garston was once a village, it is now considered a local suburb of Watford. Garston’s streets are lined with mainly 1930s semi-detached and terraced homes which give this area a vintage character.

The River Colne, which runs through Watford amongst other local towns, has high levels of pollutants and a local resident from Watford is calling on people to help him clean it up. For the past few years, local residents and organisations have banded together to clean up the river themselves. An initiative that started in 2019 with the help of environmental charity Groundwork not only involved an extensive cleanup operation but also the restoration of the river’s biodiversity.

Local Hertfordshire residents are opposing developments to be constructed on their land that is part of the Green Belt. The development will also incorporate a primary school, a nursery, flexible commercial space and a new public square.
