Guildford Town Centre

At the heart of Guildford, is the Town Centre. A bustling urban centre with that nestles the modern and the historic side by side, the centre of Guildford represents the wider identity of the town and its surrounding boroughs. Dominated by the River Wey that cuts through its centre, the ancient High Street, the looming castle and the wide array of public spaces and leisure activities; the centre of Guildford is awash with variety. Similar to a lot of town centres, the price-point of this area is high. There is a limited housing stock available, and a large percentage of the stock is dedicated to flats rather than single houses.

Guildford’s high price-point is not simply a contemporary one; from its early inception as a town the area benefited from a high-class status - from possessing a Royal Charter, a market charter, and a highly coveted license to mint coins. Guildford’s long history has such always been acquainted with luxury. Its history as a market town was sustained throughout its long history, and in an 1823-24 business directory of the area shows a huge variety of business in the town centre, from lawyers to milliners! Some of the oldest buildings in the town centre of Guildford still stand today, including St Marys Church which still has features of its 1040 AD construction!

Whilst the church and the neighbouring Guildford Cathedral indicate a strong Christian presence in the history of Guildford, there is in fact a long history with Judaism. It is believed that Jewish immigrants settled in Guildford in around the 12th century. During a 1995 excavation project on Guildford Town Centre, the team found evidence of a medieval synagogue, making it the site of the earliest remains of a synagogue in the whole of Western Europe!

Due to its history and luxurious status, properties tend to be expensive in the area, and development is often slow due to council restrictions and the proliferation of listed buildings in the town centre. However, there are plenty of flats for sale within the tight-knit fabric of the centre, and occasionally listed buildings are put up for auction by the Guildford Council; offering ample opportunities for inner-town development.
