Harpenden sits in a slope in the Chiltern Hills, nestled between the River Lea and the River Ver. There is extensive archaeological evidence that suggests occupation in the Harpenden locale pre-dating the Roman invasion of Britain, and there is plenty of Roman relics that were uncovered in the area. One such was the mausoleum remains found in Rothamsted! The settlement was given to Westminster Abbey in 1060 by King Edward the Confessor, and saw relatively slow development over the next few centuries. This was largely due to the agricultural identity of the area, which persists today with the proliferation of country-houses and farmland in the area! Harpenden grew exponentially with the advent of the railway system in Britain, and over the course of the last 100 years, has grown from a population of 3,000 to 30,000!

One of the oldest buildings in the Harpenden locale is Rothamsted Manor. Located south-west of Harpenden, first record of this manor dates from as far back as 1212! It passed through several owners throughout the centuries, until in 1843 when it was acquired by John Bennet Lawes. It was here that Lawes founded the ‘Rothamsted Experimental Station’, one of the oldest agricultural research centres in the whole world, and is still open today!

Harpenden South is largely attributed to the neighbourhood of the Southdown, which boasts a vast industrial estate and a local retail centre divested from the Harpenden town centre. Owing to the rapid development of the last 100 years and the employment protected zones of the Southdown, there is limited scope for residential development and other developments in the area of Harpenden South. However, development has been occurring aross Harpenden at large; including an affordable housing development delivered in collaboration with the Peabody group!
