Havering Park

The residential and leafy neighbourhood of Havering Park is located in the London Borough of Havering, and sits just north of Romford. The suburb has an industrial history and a unique character due to its streets of 20th century village architecture as well as its post-war terraces. Collier Row’s High Street has a timber shop, a business insurance shop, an electrical shop and other local independent shops, though it lacks convenient public transport. However, if one is willing to make the trek to nearby Hainault station, they will be able to take a Central line tube straight into central London. For those who drive too, the roads to the neighbourhood’s south give access to the A12, which leads onto the M25, which has made the area popular with commuting families.

In the 15th and 16th century, the neighbourhood was known for its charcoal burners. The original nearby hamlet of Collier Row had 56 houses in 1670 and five inns by the late 18th century. As the agricultural industry began to expand in the mid-1800s, many farmhouses were built. The opening of Romford station also attracted many wealthy Londoners, and mission churches began to be built in the village in the late- 19th century, many of which remain to this day.

Parklands School is one of the few in the area to receive “Beacon Status” due to its high standards in education.

Very few local residents come from ethnic minorities as such the area doesn’t benefit from the multiculturalism of other London areas. This led to Ofsted commenting that a local school’s pupils “are not well enough prepared for life in contemporary multicultural British society.”

The River Rom, like many of Greater London’s water bodies, has suffered from neglect and pollution. The boroughs of Havering and Barking and Dagenham, as well as local environmentally-driven non-profit organisations, have been working together to restore the river. A number of wetland and floodplain sites have been restored and enhanced through these efforts. This is significant to the area as the river borders Havering Park.
