Hayes Town
Situated to the west of this neighbourhood area, Minet Country Park offers 36 hectares of parkland, which was awarded Green Flag status in 2009. The park provides its users with a wide range of activities, suitable for all ages. This includes walking, picnicking, playing, as well as learning about wild plants and birds. It is also home to the Hillingdon Cycle Circuit, which is just under a mile long, and can be used for free by the public to compete, train or partake in a laid back weekend cycle. The area is also well-served by amenities, be that local shops within the residential area, or chain stores at the Lombardy Shopping Park. The housing in this neighbourhood is largely semi-detached, many of which are beautifully situated along tree lined boulevards, with private driveways and gardens. These all come together to give it that quintessential suburban feeling, whilst still maintaining a superb location in terms of access to central London from the nearby Hayes and Harlington station.
Archaeological evidence of Palaeolithic instruments suggests that there was early settlement of this area from around 757 AD. Many years later in the 16th century, documents emerged that detailed the extent of the area’s occupation: only 5 hamlets existed along the thoroughfare, one of which was a place called Cotman’s Town. At that time, this was referring to the town of Hayes, a very small village with few houses and residents (12 dwellings and 23 enclosed homes to be precise). The name ‘Cotman’s Town’ endured well into the 20th century, until 1929 when the first reference was made to ‘Hayes Town’, the name under which this neighbourhood falls. There is little evidence as to why the town was renamed, but the word ‘Hayes’ itself comes from the Anglo-Saxon ‘Haese’, a homage to the town’s Ancient past!
Hayes FM is a non-commercial radio station based within, and broadcasted to, the town’s community; due to the local heritage at the Vinyl factory and the connections it formerly had with the Beatles, this station promotes itself as having the longest Beatles-themed show in the whole of Europe.
With the presence of the industrial site, the landscape in some parts is less attractive due to the nature of these particular buildings and the metallic perimeter fencing that surrounds them. Additionally, the Parkway (A312) is a busy dual carriageway which prevents residents of this area from easily accessing the Country Park, which is on the opposite side of the road to the neighbourhood. Despite this, measures have been taken to plant hedging along the edge to ensure visual disturbance is minimised.
The station of Hayes and Hillingdon is just outside this neighbourhood; however, the opening of the Elizabeth Line in 2022, which also stops at this station, is expected to impact the surrounding urban landscape, including that of Hayes Town. The new line has led to upgrades that increase passenger capacity at the station and it has also greatly increased the area’s connectivity to Central London. Closely linked to these changes are the developments occurring in the town centre, which aim to enhance the area in light of the Elizabeth Line developments and regeneration at the Old Vinyl Factory, which is expected to be completed in 2023. The site, to be called The Gramophone, will celebrate the area’s rich cultural and industrial heritage whilst providing a state-of-the-art bespoke cultural and entertainment hub for Hayes and West London. With regard to improvements in thw wider area, an extension of the Botwell Bridge is anticipated, to ensure that areas can be more easily accessed by cyclists and pedestrians, which will maximise the opportunities and economic vitality of the town centre.
