Herne Hill & Norwood Road

Herne Hill is a suburban feeling neighbourhood, nestled between Brixton and Dulwich. The streets are lined with lush green trees and rows of beautiful Victorian terraced houses. Despite not being far from Central London, the neighbourhood has a quaint community orientated vibe. Locals enjoy the many family run and independent eateries, such as Café Provencal and Saray, which serves some of the best Turkish food in the area. For kids in the neighbourhood, they’re lucky to have the great Charter School North Dulwich nearby, which sits up against the spacious Sunray Gardens, equipped with not just play equipment but also a small lake. The area’s historical roots shine when grabbing a drink at The Half Moon Pub, an inn that’s been around for over a century. With all of these, in addition to the incoming developments, there’s plenty to get excited about in Herne Hill!

Herne Hill dates back to medieval times when the manor of Milkwell stood there. Due to the over protective nature of the landowners, development was greatly restricted. Even by the late 18th century, the area was still largely rural with just a few large houses. Once these old leases came to an end in the 1800s, more housing developments took off. Many of the homes built during this time were terraced houses. A large number of independent shops also began to pop up in the neighbourhood. Following WWI, the council helped construct larger estates in order to house the many Londoners in need of new homes. Throughout the mid and late 20th century, the area struggled financially but has since bounced back.

Herne Hill was once home to famous writer, John Ruskin. He is perhaps best known for his work as an art critic.

Unfortunately, this part of the neighbourhood doesn’t have its own rail station. Still, many residents enjoy driving themselves while others don’t mind the short walk to nearby Herne Hill station.

Peabody has been working on two major developments in the neighbourhood. The first, Higgs Industrial Estate, will be a mixed-use scheme, providing 134 new homes and 4,000 m2 of commercial space to the neighbourhood. This project is scheduled to complete in 2023. They also recently finished the Milkwood Road Development. This complex offers over 40 new homes, which have been praised for their Scandinavian inspired design.
