Highwood Hill
This charming neighbourhood, which incorporates the majority of the sought-after Highwood Hill, is situated in the north western borough of Barnet. The locality is semi-rural in nature and is filled with Georgian houses, weatherboard cottages, large detached interwar mansions, and twenties semis and terraces. Highwood Hill is best known for its tranquil, suburban, and village-like atmosphere, making it an ideal place for professionals, artists, and families looking to gain access to the local schools, which have all been rated from good to outstanding. There are a few restaurants directly in the neighbourhood, including The Rising Sun, a pub from the 17th century, and The Good Earth, an upscale and well-reviewed Chinese restaurant, and there are many more shops, cafes, and bars near the Mill Hill Broadway train station. With its ample green space, such as Highwood Park, this neighbourhood is an excellent choice for those who want to get away from the hustle and bustle of central London.
Highwood Hill and its surrounding areas have a long history dating back thousands of years. Up until 410AD the Romans had some presence in the locale, suggested by scattered remains and artefacts found in the neighbourhood, as well as parts of a minor ancient road that were unearthed. This area was also once buried in an ancient forest that covered the most of Middlesex, Herts & Essex. This forest was mostly torn down over the years, but remnants of it can still be seen today in the woods at Moat Mount. It is also thought that there was an Iron Age settlement near Moat Mount in 500BC.
The local community is a fan of holding festivals and specialised markets. They have a Summer festival, Autumn market, French market, and Winter festival every year!
Patrick Troughton grew up in this neighbourhood area. He attended Mill Hill School and is most known for playing the second doctor on Doctor Who.
A downside of living in this neighbourhood is that it can take a little long to commute into central London every day, especially during peak times when delays can be rife. There is a Thameslink station close by, but if one wants the tube, it requires a bus or a long walk to get to the nearest station. However, residents do get a lot of benefits from being outside the hustle and bustle of central London.
Highwood Hill has not proven to be as attractive to developers as neighbouring Edgware and especially to the South East in the area around Mill Hill East Station. That said, Barnet Council does encourage visiting the area for its nature walks and its ecological significance, with a 7km Mill Hill Heritage Walk that passes through Highwood Hill.
