Hornchurch & Harrow Lodge Park

This part of Hornchurch sits nestled in the northern part of the area, just above the lush Harrow Lodge Park. The park is one of the largest within the borough of Havering and boasts two lakes, a café, basketball courts, and tennis courts. With the River Ravensbourne running through it, it’s no wonder that families are so drawn to this locality. Beyond the park, the streets are lined with affordable semi-detached houses, many of which have their own driveways and gardens, and are perfect for families. For those attracted to the area for these affordable homes, they’re also pleasantly surprised by the local schools, like St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Hornchurch High School. Kids and parents alike have no shortage of ways to stay occupied throughout the weekend as well. You’ll find skaters trying out tricks at the iconic Rom Skatepark, friends catching up over a home cooked pie at Al’s Pie & Mash, and families checking out the many shops lining the high street. For those in search of a bustling but affordable neighbourhood within Hornchurch, this is a great choice!

Harrow Lodge Park is an anchor within this part of Hornchurch. It was obviously not always just a park though. Back in the late-16th century, the land made up the Maylards Green manor. Later on, during the Second World War, the manor was converted into 60 acres of public use space. This allowed for food production throughout the war. It wasn’t until the 1960s that the land was transformed by the council into a proper public park. The council added tennis courts, a boating lake, and even a miniature golf course. Locals are still enjoying all of these facilities today.

This part of Hornchurch is home to the famous Rom Skatepark. Built in 1978, this was the first skatepark in Europe to have listed status.

The neighbourhood’s tube station, Elm Park, is only serviced by the District line. Unfortunately, since this line makes so many stops, it can be quite the lengthy ride into London. Still, residents are happy that they’re lucky enough to have a tube station, and find that they’re always able to grab a seat at their point in the line.

Havering Council and Wates Residential entered a £1 billion public-private partnership to regenerate 12 council estates. The scheme will see around 5,200 homes delivered in the borough over the next 12 to 15 years. Works have already begun, with a focus on Napier and New Plymouth House, in Rainham. the Serena, Solar and Sunrise Courts in Hornchurch have also been selected for the scheme. The Solar, Serena and Sunrise Courts site will provide 175 new high quality apartments by Autumn 2023, all of which will be designed to fully meet the needs and aspirations of local people who are approaching, or who have reached, retirement age. So far the partnership has benefited 164 local people through employment and skills initiatives, while over 1,500 students have been supported via educational activities and programmes.
