Hounslow West & Cranford
This neighbourhood is in the London Borough of Hounslow, west London. It sits South of Hounslow West Road and Hounslow South East Road and is located nearby to Lampton and Osterley. The locality has many busy main roads such as the A315, the A3063, Bath Road, Lampton Road and Kingsley Road, which provide the area with good accessibility. Although Hounslow is around 15 miles from the City of London, it is reminiscent of central London in that it has three underground stations less than 2 miles from each other. Compared to other parts of west London, Hounslow has quite a unique character. Its high street is a two-lane thoroughfare allowing a large number of vehicles to pass through the neighbourhood, however, it still has a local feeling with many boutique shops, independent restaurants and family run cafes.
Hounslow is said to mean ‘hound’s mound’ – the ‘mound’ is thought to be an ancient burial barrow, but it is unclear as to whether the ‘hound’ is either in reference to a person or the animal. The coaching industry began to flourish in the area, and by 1635 Hounslow was known as a major coaching route; the local Bath and Staines Roads helped with this. From the 18th to early 19th century the first westbound coach stop from London was Hounslow, resulting in over 200 coaches passing through Hounslow every day in 1833. Hounslow coach history is immortalised in the name of the famous Hounslow pub on 684 London Road, The Coach & Horses. The area centred around Hounslow High Street started to develop into a modern town centre in the early-20th century as civic offices, a library, and public baths were built.
Local team CB Hounslow United Football Club has played in the Division One of the Combined Counties League since 2005.
In 1784 the first ever Royal Mail Coach service passed through Hounslow on its journey between Bath and London.
Hounslow High Street has been injected with £210m to expand and improve green spaces, restaurants and shops as part of the regeneration masterplan in the borough. The regeneration opportunity in Hounslow allows further potential for 65,000 new jobs to be created whilst attracting more businesses and visitors to Hounslow. Development in the area has been ongoing since 2019. The crowning jewel of this regeneration initiative is a large-scale development project by the name of High Street Quarter. The development offers apartments consisting of 1, 2 and 3 bedrooms, creating a total of 528 new homes. These units are built around a public square with shops, restaurants, cafes and a Cineworld, giving residents a wealth of amenities on the doorstep to their property.
