Kilburn Park & West Kilburn
This neighbourhood, known locally as Kilburn, is situated in the northwest London Borough of Brent. It has numerous green spaces nearby for residents to choose from- Queen’s Park, Paddington Recreation Ground, and Randolph Gardens. The neighbourhood also offers unexpected entertainment options, like a memorial to animals killed in war off of Cambridge Avenue and St. Augustine’s Church, built in the late 1800s and known as the cathedral of north London. Residents enjoy an easy commute into central London with ample bus routes, two overground stations, and two tube stations in close proximity. It is a great neighbourhood for families and professionals who want a little more space and greenery than what can be found in central London.
Kilburn’s name comes from a stream that formerly constituted the upper part of the River Westbourne. The area’s origins are from a 12th-century priory that was founded on the banks of the Kilburn Brook on the site of a former hermitage. Today this area is the modern-day junction of Kilburn High Road and Belsize Road. The Kilburn Priory was a small community of nuns and was dissolved by King Henry VIII in the early 16th century. Nothing remains of it today except the name of Abbey Road, which was so named because it was a path that once led to the priory.
Kilburn Park tube station was the first station to be designed around escalators, rather than lifts!
The neighbourhood has some wonderful architecture, but some of the buildings are a little run down and drab. Theft is also often reported in the area. However, residents report feeling relatively safe at night and find the neighbourhood interesting.
Alphabet, by Higgins Homes, is a recently completed development of 30 private one, two and three bedroom apartments, each featuring high specification interiors with a balcony or winter garden, set around a landscaped square. Parkside, another residential development in the area, is comprised of one, two and three-bedroom luxury apartments. Slightly older, but far more ambitious in its targets, is the regeneration of South Kilburn by Brent Council in partnership with the South Kilburn New Deal for Communities. The Kilburn Park developments cover a 2.09 hectare site, replacing two existing isolated estates with 102 new dwellings.
