Lower Feltham
This neighbourhood sits in the southern part of Feltham, within the Borough of Hounslow. Easily accessible via the Feltham Rail Station, the locality is great for anyone looking to commute to Waterloo Station. While the area attracts mostly working-class individuals in search of affordable post-war housing, it also has the potential to become a popular spot for families in the coming years. Home to the updated Longford Centre, residents never have to walk far to get to the cinema, supermarket, or any major retailer. As of now, Feltham might still not have the best aesthetic reputation, but with regeneration plans on the table, there are about to be a lot of positive changes throughout the area.
Feltham was originally a manor belonging to Earl Mortaigne. The manor then passed through multiple owners’ hands, and in 1537 was even run by Henry VIII. Following the arrival of the railway in the 19th century, Feltham developed into a village that sat within Middlesex. Londoners viewed the village as a pleasant rural alternative to the city and the neighbourhood was quickly filled with many impressive and ornate houses. Since then, most of the Victorian buildings and cottages have been demolished and replaced with post-war flats.
Oasis filmed the music video for Stand By Me at the local Longford Centre back in 1997. The centre had yet to be renovated at that point, but there are still parts that are recognisable.
Most of the shops in the neighbourhood are the major chain stores at the Longford Centre, meaning that there are few independent shops and eateries in the area. Residents don’t really mind though as they find the centre to be a huge convenience.
Feltham Rail Station recently underwent major redevelopment. Network Rail completed in 2021 a £31 million upgrade that delivers significant benefits to passengers on a busy commuter line into London Waterloo. These include extended platforms to allow longer 10-car trains to call, while the Feltham West level crossing has been closed to improve community safety. Accessibility has also been improved with the construction of a new shared pedestrian and cycle bridge, providing a bike-friendly route over the railway, along with a further step-free entrance to platform 1, next to newly positioned bus stops, improving local connections.
