Mill Hill Broadway

Situated in the northwestern London Borough of Barnet, and positioned between the rumbling M1 and Mill Hill, this charming neighbourhood is a made up of large interwar homes dispersed amongst large open green spaces. Near Mill Hill Broadway train station, there is a wealth of local shops, delis, cafes and numerous restaurants offering a wide variety of cuisines, including El Vaquero, a popular Argentinian restaurant. The area also has a number of leisure facilities and activities nearby, like the Mill Hill Golf Club and the well-respected London Equestrian Centre, as well as Chase Lodge Playing Field, Lyndhurst Park, and Arrandene Open Space. The neighbourhood is also filled with well-rated schools, making it a great choice for families, professionals, and artists who want space and tranquillity just a short journey from central London.

This neighbourhood has a history dating back a thousand years. The Middlesex Forest covered most of the district, and small settlements slowly expanded in the area as parts of the forest were cleared. In the 14th century, a windmill was built on high ground here, hence the name “Mill Hill”. The locality was transformed into farming land, producing hay to feed the large equine population of London, but it was not until the 18th and 19th century that roads began to appear. The initial development of Mill Hill as a residential area occurred after the opening of the railways in the 19th century, and again after the building of the A1/A41 in 1926. Much of this interwar building remains today, and gives the area its suburban feel.

Graham Hill, the World Champion racing driver, lived in the area from 1960 to 1972. Mill Hill also hosts its own music festival every June, and has done so for more than 20 years.

A downside of living in this neighbourhood is that it can take a little long to commute into central London every day, depending on where one is going. There is a Thameslink station in the neighbourhood’s boundary, but if one wants the tube, it requires a bus or a bit more walking to get there. However, residents do get a lot of benefits for being outside the hustle and bustle of central London.

Mill Hill Broadway has not proven to be as attractive to developers as neighbouring Edgware and especially to the South East in the area around Mill Hill East Station. That said, ongoing and completed developments in the neighbourhood’s surrounding are expected to be very impactful, even for residents and users of the local area. Construction interest may even spill over into the neighbourhood in the near future.
