North-East Guildford
Part of the suburban fabric of Guildford, the northeasterly portion of Guildford is a rich residential area filled with a variety of housing stock, that in particular houses a lot of the student population attached to the University of Surrey. Connected by the A3, A323 and A322, this area is highly suburbanised with an array of commuting options.
Guildford’s twentieth-century history is invariably tied to military history, particularly the devastating WWI and WWII’s, which had a unique impact on the locale of Guildford writ large. Its history is particularly tied to the northeasterly section of the Guildford suburbs, with the 1876 construction of the Stoughton Barracks. Built in a Victorian Gothic Revival style with finials and hood-moulds, the impressive barracks were built to house 300 men, and to be the headquarters for the 2nd Surrey Militia. The Stoughton Barracks were operational until its closure in 1959. In 1994 and 1995, many of the buildings surrounding the barracks were converted into properties with a central green space, and is now known as Cardwell’s Keep.
Stoughton and North-East Guildford are known for housing a large percentage of the student population from the University of Surrey, which sits to the south of this area. The University of Surrey is ranked 4th on the UK university league tables, and has a student population of over 12,500!
Due to this mixture of student populations and general suburban populations, there is a large variety of housing stock available; from rentable properties to detached properties for sale. A lot of these properties are new builds, following the Cardwell’s Keep developments of the mid 1990s, and therefore there is ample room for residential development in the area!
