North Furzedown

Furzedown is located in the South London Borough of Wandsworth. This neighbourhood area is located between Streatham and Tooting. Residents of Furzedown benefit from being surrounded by large open green spaces, which are available to the public. These include Tooting Bec Common and Streatham Park. Furzedown is predominately a residential area with 19th and 20th century houses. Furzedown has a number of local businesses, but is also not far away from urban amenities such as an Odeon Cinema, ice skating, and leisure facilities in nearby Streatham.

The origins of the name ‘Furzedown’ are relatively recent, having been named in the 1600s after the local gorse that grew there. In the early 19th century local builders began to lay residential streets on the grounds of the house, such as Pretoria Road and Pendle Road. In the late 19th century, Furzedown House was owned by the Seely family. Furzedown House was almost demolished, but it was turned into a Teacher Training College by the London Country Council in 1915; it is currently part of Graveny School.

Graveny School was created in 1986, after Furzedown Secondary school, which was formed in 1977, merged with Ensham School.

Wandsworth Council has recently invested in housing, which is capable of assisting and supporting disabled residents, within Furzedown. Furthermore, the Council is showing their priority for electric cars by investing heavily in the provision of electric car charging stations across the area. An unmet demand for student housing has also been identified in the area. In response, plans for the development of ‘Furzedown Student Village’ have been developed and proposals sent, though it’s too soon to say if the scheme will move forward unchanged.
