North Hillingdon
The neighbourhood of Hillingdon is a popular commuter suburb located in the Uxbridge area west of London. Easily accessible via the Piccadilly and Metropolitan lines via Hillingdon Station, it’s no wonder that so many working families have chosen to settle out there. Still, the wonderful transport connections don’t mean that residents are rushing to leave on their days off as well. Locals love spending time off with their families in Hillingdon Court Park, and strolling around the leafy streets of this beautiful village. With streets that are lined with large family houses, all with private gardens, residents are spoiled by the serenity that oozes through the neighbourhood. When in search of something more lively, locals flock to Uxbridge Masonic Hall for various events and parties, or Pangs for delicious Chinese food, followed by a pint at The Swallow. With all that it has to offer, it’s easy to see why more and more families are considering the move.
Hillingdon likely dates back to the 12th century, when the Church of St John the Baptist was built in the neighbourhood. However, at the time, much of the area remained undeveloped or farmland. By the early 20th century, the area began to grow into a village. This was due in part to Uxbridge becoming the administrative body over the village, in addition to the arrival of tram services. Following the First World War, the village expanded into a commuter suburb. Once the wars had ended, the council began to build large estates in order to cater to incoming residents.
Today, the neighbourhood remains a popular commuter suburb - with easy connections into central London.
Hillingdon Court Park is a public park that was once the site of Hillingdon Court Manor. Today, it’s home to the American Community School.
The busy A40 road cuts through this neighbourhood. Being a multi-lane street, its traffic brings quite a lot of noise and pollution to the area. Even so, residents find that being so close has its benefits as well. For drivers, they have easy access to the convenient road.
Hillingdon Council has launched the well-received Hillingdon Improvement Programme (HIP). Aside from improving the processes that the council uses to engage with residents and improve the public spaces, the programme will also focus on specific community sites. Some of the work so far has included refurbishing the Ruislip Lido as well as various schools in the area. Improvements are still expected to continue as in early 2022 Hillingdon Council approved to fund and support further social infrastructure and services development, as part of their 2022-23 budget.
