North West Feltham

Feltham is a suburb just beneath Heathrow Airport that is filled with many industrial businesses. A large number of the buildings in the neighbourhood were built following WWII, and cater towards the airline related companies in the area. The side streets, however, are lined with rows of affordable terraced houses. While they might not be as endearing as the Victorian and Georgian style houses of Central London, their affordability has drawn in many families and Heathrow employees. For those who make the move, they’re able to find plenty of things to enjoy in the neighbourhood. Whether it’s the drinks at The Load of Hay, strolls along the Duke of Northumberland’s River, or watching planes take off from the Spotting Point, there’s enough to keep residents occupied in this outer London suburb.

The neighbourhood of North Feltham used to be filled with gunpowder mills - many of which frequently blew up. There were also some mills that produced swords in the area. Most of the neighbourhood was rebuilt following WWII, with only a few Victorian homes remaining. Whilst the area was once home to the National Maritime Institute, it eventually moved to nearby Teddington. Today, there are many logistics and shipping businesses, which are based out of the neighbourhood.

Beloved singer, Freddie Mercury, grew up in the neighbourhood. Known for his success as the front man of Queen, he moved to the Feltham area with his parents when they had to flee from Zanzibar in the 1960s.

The neighbourhood lacks the array of independent shops that many London high streets boast; most of the businesses in the area are chain shops. Still, residents don’t mind this, and find that everything they need is generally in easy reach.

Hounslow Council has been investing in new housing in the area. In 2021, 25 new homes were recently completed at Barnham Court in Feltham as part of the council’s redevelopment of the Sparrow Farm Community Centre. That year as well, the council picked builder Willmott Dixon to deliver its Frank Towell Court 102 homes scheme, a £32m scheme that involves the construction of two eight-storey residential towers, a four-storey block of flats and seven Mews houses. In Summer 2022, councillors celebrated the progress at the site and construction is expected to be completed by November 2022. The council has also completed improvements to the public realm that have been long awaited. In 2021, The Feltham Arenas Parklands Masterplan, which was launched in 2016, celebrated its first milestone with the official unveiling of a host of new environmental improvements.
