North-East Mitcham
A tree-lined neighbourhood consisting almost entirely of 70s and 80s modern built houses, expect large driveways and gardens but don’t expect to get around easily without a car. This neighbourhood is surrounded by greenery, including the C & L Country CLub, 2 golf courses, Lime Tree Park, Rectory Park, and a fishing centre - an idyllic suburb retreat for commuters and families. Yeading Lane provides all the amenities one needs, featuring a medical centre, co-operative supermarket, barber, pharmacy, tool shop, as well as a few cafes and low-end restaurants. There are a number of schools and nurseries in this area as well, rated from ‘good’ to ‘outstanding’.
This neighbourhood was largely unpopulated throughout most of history, with historical records reporting very little inhabitants. In 1938, the area was reported to only have 20 dwellings in total. However, after the large-scale reconstruction of Britain began in the wake of the Second World War, housing estates were built along the waterways of Yeading. A few churches then followed in the 1960s, creating a relatively small but active community.
The Yeading Brook that flows through this neighbourhood is a tributary of the River Crane that residents can follow on a 20-mile walk known as the Hillingdon Trail. It passes through woods, fields, meadows, parks and nature reserves.
In Yeading there are over 5 different main languages spoken. These include Panjabi, Tamil, Somali, and Polish.
The main downside to this neighbourhood is that it does not offer much in the way of entertainment on rainy days or during the night. There are very few late-night restaurants, and few choices in terms of pubs. Residents have to make a journey via rail into central London if they wish to go to the cinema, theatre, or the like.
A number of small but highly-requested changes are planned to take place around this neighbourhood area that will not drastically change the quiet suburban feel. A new outdoor gym has just been added at Brookside Playing Fields, and Yeading Lane playground has been refurbished. In addition to this, Trading Standards is making regular visits to traders throughout the borough to ensure legal products are sold only using test purchases.
