Orsett

Orsett is in the Borough of Thurrock, within the ceremonial county of Essex. It is closely located to the A13 road, the A1013 road and the A1089 making this area extremely accessible to other parts of London. It includes areas such as Badgers Dene, Grays, Orsett and Little Thurrock. Orsett is around 5 km north-east of Grays. Orsett High Road, starts from Baker Street and continues to Rectory Road. It contains Orsett’s Village Hall, The Foxhound pub and the historic St Giles and All Saints Church which all illustrate the historic legacy of this suburban Essex treasure. Unlike inner city London this neighbourhood area is surrounded by some of South East England’s large open green spaces, with much of the Thurrock Borough coming under Green Belt land.

Orsett was historically an agricultural village, with many historical local residents partaking in farming. Orsett’s residential development mainly took off during the mid 1950s. Orsett is a parish and village four miles north of Tilbury. Orsett St. Giles and All Saints is a Church that dates back to 1170. Orsett Golf course was founded in 1899, making it one of Essex’s oldest golf courses.

Mammoths once grazed in the Thurrock!

Orsett Golf Course is an all year golf course, that has hosted the regional qualifying round of the Open Championships on eleven different occasions!

Due to Orsett’s suburban character, residents do not get to enjoy the hustle and bustle of city life. Furthermore, there are not many local amenities directly in Orsett such as cinemas, bowling alleys or ice rinks.

In 2020, it was announced that the local Orsett Hospital would be permanently closed within the coming 5 years and replaced by four integrated medical centres across the borough – though only one was near completion as of 2022. With regard to education, in early 2022 the green light was given for the development of another school, the new Orsett Heath Academy, on land around Thurrock Rugby Club in Grays. The new eight-form secondary school will provide places for 1,200 children from Year 7 to Year 11. The South West Community Trust, which is leading the development, hopes the new main school will be open for the 2023/24 intake.
