Rush Green & Eastbrookend Country Park

This neighbourhood is comprised of Romford and Rush Green, located in the London Borough of Havering. Rush Green is practically encircled by nature, wildlife and greenery. It has the Oldchurch Park to its North, Eastbrookend Country Park to its South, the River Rom to its East, and Central Park to its West. Residents use the local open green spaces for walking, dog walking or sports. There are many local sports teams that meet up in this area which make use of Rush Green’s proximity to open green spaces.

Rush Green is named after a hamlet which grew rushes, this activity was first recorded in 1651. This central hamlet also had a large concentration of farms until the late 1800s. Rush Green hospital opened in 1900 starting as an isolation unit, but later expanding to become a general hospital after the creation of the Becontree estate. Romford Council built some of its earliest houses in Rush Green in the 1920s.

West Ham football club have submitted plans to Havering Council to expand their Rush Green training sites gym and fitness facilities. Rush Green College was created in 1961, but has since become a part of the Barking and Dagenham College.

Some argue that Rush Green seems like an informal part of East London’s urban sprawl.

Havering Borough Council made the difficult decision in Fall 2022 to suggest a budget that includes services closing, significant changes in other services and a Council Tax increase of 60p per week for a Band D property in the borough, seeing as they are facing a £70 million budget cut over the next 4 years. The River Rom, like many of Greater London’s water bodies, has suffered from neglect and pollution. The boroughs of Havering and Barking and Dagenham, as well as local environmentally-driven non-profit organisations, have been working together to restore the river. Just south of Romford, works to restore the floodplains and wetlands of the River Rom in Grenfell Park, which the river borders, were completed in 2018. Other wetland sites along the river have also received support. Development interest has also noticeably increased to the north of the area, in Romford town centre.
