Seal

On the eastern edge of the town of Sevenoaks lies the village and civil parish of Seal in Kent. A historic parish with strong medieval origins - Seal has long remained one of the most desirable locations in the wider Sevenoaks locale. Nestled next to the suburban enclave surrounding Bat & Ball Station and the wider swathes of the pastoral Kent countryside - the surburban fabric of Seal is dominated by detached and terraced suburban properties, as well as grand-scale country properties!

Although the neighbouring Sevenoaks was indeed not reported in the 1086 Domesday Book, Seal was. Listed in the Helmestrei Hundred in Kent, Seal reportedly had over 50 households by the late 11th century. Largely because Seal is probably much older than the invasion of the Normans. In 1086 the village was recorded as ‘La Sela’, which for many years led historians to believe that the name came from Old French, although there is no evidence to suggest this. The name Seal supposedly relates to ‘miry place’ or ‘willow copse’. One of the oldest buildings in Seal is the Church of St Peter and Paul, which dates from the 13th century, although evidence suggests that there existed a previous church! It is now a Grade I listed property and boasts amazing views of the North Downs.

Although a small community which had been largely rural until after WWI, Seal has been home to some notable people - one of which is Emma Corrin, who famously portrayed Princess Diana in Netflix’s ‘The Crown’!

In the recent Sevenoaks District Council’s Local Plan, the Sevenoaks District has allocated the provisions of the construction of over 1,000 new homes to be developed across the peripheral edges of Sevenoaks - and allocated in particular to Seal! Although the area of Seal is subject to conservation efforts and design plans in order to retain Seal’s semi-rural identity; housing developments must complement this existing fabric. However, applications for small-scale affordable housing developments in the western edge of Seal have have been made - so there is definite scope for development!
