Shepherd’s Bush Road & Hammersmith Road

This neighbourhood is a desirable area conveniently located at the eastern edge of the Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. Easily reached via the Overground or Underground lines that pass through the Kensington (Olympia) station, it’s an area that is in high demand. Even if you can’t afford one of the mansion flats or large Victorian houses, it’s an area that’s still a great place to explore. After wandering through the many shops and eateries on Hammersmith Road, it’s worth the visit to the interesting archives at Blythe House, or the works of art at Indian Romance Gallery. If in search of a bite to eat, locals love the Italian food at The Bird In Hand, and the sweets at Betty Blythe Tea Room. After exploring the neighbourhood, it might be hard to leave.

Blythe House is an iconic building in the centre of the neighbourhood. This building dates back to 1861 when an Act of Parliament established the Post Office Savings Bank. While it began at the General Post Office, the bank quickly outgrew the space. By the late 19th century, the Post Office needed to move the bank to its own building. In 1898, they acquired a five acre site in the area. The cost of the site and building, the eventual Blythe House, came to a total of 315,000 pounds. By 1903, the building was ready to accommodate the 4,000 bank staffers. Until 1936, the male and female employees were separated into different wings of the building. In 1938, the basements of Blythe House were converted into air-raid shelters. Since the bank’s headquarters moved to Glasgow in 1963, Blythe House now serves as a museum and conservation space.

Accomplished poet, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, once lived in the neighbourhood. He’s most well known for his works - The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Biographia Literaria.

Unfortunately, since the houses in this neighbourhood are so desirable, their price tags reflect that. While some residents have been able to find moderately priced rentals, the majority of homes in the area cater to upper class Londoners.

With such a desirable location, many developers are consistently looking for new ways to invest in the neighbourhood. Amongst the many projects in the area is The Atelier, by Regal London and completed in 2020. This development brought to the market 43 luxury apartments. Equipped with a concierge, gym, cinema, and courtyard, the homes have already received quite a lot of interest. Other new developments have also mushroomed in the area, with many residential and commercial new builds in the process of development or already completed.
