South Bushey Heath & Sparrows Herne

This neighbourhood, which is situated to the South East of Watford, and North West of Edgware, is delightfully surrounded by a plethora of green open leisure spaces, including Hartsbourne Country Club and Bushey Country Club. Residents also have access to nearby Hilfield Park Reservoir, as well as the slightly smaller Aldenham Reservoir, which are particularly popular with nature enthusiasts for its rich biodiversity. And don’t be fooled that this is all that the area has to offer – the nearby, small-town, high street meets all of its residents’ needs, offering a barber, off licence, and local shops, all of which provide a warm and friendly welcome!

The local pub, The Three Crowns, is a particular favourite, especially on a Thursday and Sunday, when it offers a quiz night and homecooked Sunday lunch respectively. With a large number of houses in this area boasting spacious driveways and gardens, which are also available at a reasonable price, it’s no wonder why this neighbourhood is so popular with its residents.

During the 18th century, this area was once bisected by a toll road, which connected the two areas of London and Aylesbury, and went on to connect to other turnpikes in the north, allowing travel between London and Birmingham. This road was named Sparrows Herne Turnpike Road; the name was given due to the location of the turnpike’s depot which was situated at Sparrows Herne. Whilst the road itself no longer exists, it is possible to see the approximate route that it took by looking at the current A41. In 1872, the turnpike was passed to the parishes located along the route and they decided to remove the tolls. The introduction of the railway to the area ultimately threatened the turnpike’s viability in any case.

Up until the 18th century, the area of Bushey Heath was un-farmed, and therefore was densely covered with trees. This landscape has become the stuff of legend, and there have been many stories of thieves, and highwaymen lurking in the shadows along the road from Bushey Heath to Stanmore. Because of this, it became customary for people to gather at the Three Crows pub prior to making their journeys so that they did not have to travel alone.

One of the main downsides of this neighbourhood is its lack of local underground or train station, with the nearest being located in Stanmore and Carpenders Park respectively. Despite this, the road networks in this area are particularly good, with close access to both the M25 and M1.

There are no major development plans proposed in this area; however, there is ongoing interest and investment into the construction of a number of new-build homes. One of the most recent changes has been the redevelopment of the former police station, which has been turned into two- and three-bedroom properties. More recently, in 2021 it was revealed that the local authority had earmarked plots of green belt land in Bushey and Bushey Heath for development. While these suggestions may have good intentions, specifically the development of new housing, it has proven to be a controversial suggestion, with many local residents concerned about how these projects would impact the landscape and the atmosphere of their neighbourhoods.
