South Dagenham & Dagenham Dock

This neighbourhood sits in the borough of Barking and Dagenham, just along the scenic Gores Brook. Families flock to the area for the many affordable post- war semis that line the suburban streets, in addition to a multitude of other conveniences. With Merrielands Retail Park at the neighbourhood’s centre, it’s only a short trip for locals to a variety of huge shops and attractions, including the Hollywood Bowl Dagenham and the Vue Cinema Dagenham. During those warmer months, when it’s best to take advantage of the great outdoors, residents can be found strolling through the lush Goresbrook Park, followed by a pint at the nearby Me An’O’Brien’s. Even with the neighbourhood’s modest aesthetics and quiet vibes, it’s easy to see why residents feel so at home in the area.

Local Goresbrook Park was formed in 1930, and by 1938, there had been levels to provide turf, a sandpit, and even a paddling pool. Although the park was in need of more development work, Barking Council’s funding was stalled - delaying the further improvements. It wasn’t until the 1950s, that the work began again. By 1957, the park had been fully developed. Today, it’s popular amongst locals and boasts many trees, shrubs and children’s play areas.

Goresbrook Park was converted into a park only because it sits in a flood zone. This made the land undevelopable, leading the LCC to reserve it for open space in 1930.

The busy A13 road cuts through this neighbourhood. Being a multi-lane street, its traffic brings quite a lot of noise and pollution to the area. Even so, residents find that being so close has its benefits as well. For drivers, they have easy access to the convenient road.

A new housing development, Merrielands by Latimer Crescent at Marrielands Crescent, was recently completed in the neighbourhood. A multi award-winning development providing a contemporary collection of one and two bedroom apartments, the projects delivers one building with 5-7 storeys, and another building with 6-10 storeys, providing in total 325 dwellings, 1,514 m2 of commercial space, and 3,260 sq m of amenity space.
