South Hanwell
This predominantly residential area sits usefully just above the M4 and to the south-west of Ealing. Quaint and suburban, the neat rows of semidetached and terraced homes offer a strong sense of an almost village-like community. However, the proximity of Boston Manor tube station and the M4 make the neighbourhood a key spot for getting in and out of London. Additionally, nearby amenities including Ealing Hospital, local shops and parks and even a Golf Course are simply at the doorstep. The River Brent offers residents lovely waterside views, while the much-loved Elthorne Park gives locals a swathe of open green space that’s perfect for dog walks and runs.
Elthorne’s history dates back as far as the Saxon period, when the area was populated by farmers who lived mostly rural lifestyles along the banks of the River Brent. Gradually, areas of land such as Boston Manor and Hanwell were divided amongst many medieval aristocrats. However, Elthorne is probably most known for being home to St Bernard’s Hospital, which was once the largest psychiatric hospital in Europe. Established in the 1800s and run by social reformer John Conolly, it had a revolutionarily humane approach to treating the mentally unwell. Ealing Hospital now sits on its original grounds and continues its legacy of compassionate healthcare.
A glacial boulder, which was excavated from under Townholme Crescent can be found at the entrance of Elthorne Park. It’s lovingly called the Hanwell sarsen stone by locals and is supposed to date from the Ice Age. Stonehenge is also made up of sarsen stone!
Nearby along Uxbridge Road, Jim Marshall, the founder of the iconic amplifier company and ‘father of the loud’ established his now-iconic sound system shop.
Residents located close to the M4, which runs along the south of the neighbourhood and through park of Brent Valley Park, have expressed concerns about its effects on the health of residents and the environment. Widespread issues in the broader area of Hanwell about fly tipping, demand for housing and house prices are also reflected in the neighbourhood.
Local developments include the £3.7 million Boston Manor restoration project, the expansion of the Elizabeth line and new affordable housing developments. The site’s renovation began in 2019 and the process is reported to be going smoothly, with the Manor’s expected reopening, right on schedule, set for Autumn 2022. The grade A-listed Manor is hoped to attract new visitors to the area and protect a key part of the area’s heritage. The Elizabeth line, which will run through nearby Hanwell station, is also expected to affect housing demand as the neighbourhood becomes more attractive to those seeking to work in the city, but relax elsewhere.
