South Mimms

With winding green roads lined with 19th century brick terraced houses, it’s no wonder that visitors are so taken by South Mimms. Nestled next to Potters Bar in Hertfordshire, this rural feeling suburb offers locals a welcome retreat from nearby busy London. With great schooling options in the area, like St Giles Primary, families are especially drawn to the area. More quiet than the other pockets of Hertfordshire, South Mimms still offers locals options for socialising over the weekend. Whether it’s antiquing at Canonbury Antiques, sharing a pizza at The Old Guinea, or catching up over a pint at Black Horse, there’s enough to keep families busy in the area. Furthermore, what the neighbourhood lacks in liveliness, it makes up for in its rural charm.

South Mimms dates back to 1253, when it was the most northern parish of Middlesex. Much of the land consisted of manors for wealthy owners, and earls. While little of the original manors are intact today, an excavation in the 1970s led to the discovery of a former manor castle. It’s believed that the castle was built back in the 12th century! Later on, in the 17th and 18th centuries, much of the land was converted into farms. It wasn’t until much later, at the end of the 19th century, and following World War I, that residential development picked up in the neighbourhood. Today, many of the old terraced houses still stand, lining the lush rural streets.

Local KCM church is home to multiple historic gifts. Some of these include the Book of Common Prayer from 1669, as well as three volumes of John Fox’s Acts and Monuments of Martyrs from 1682!

With no railway stations in the neighbourhood, residents mostly rely on their cars to get around. Even so, locals don’t mind this - and find the road network quite accessible and convenient.

Housing development is much slower in South Mimms than it is in other London suburbs
Due to its location, firmly within the greenbelt. Still, investors are still looking for ways to provide more homes in the area. Developers King & Co, just recently were appointed to develop new office space and homes through South Mimms’ Local Plan. This plan will bring over 100 new homes, many of which will be set at affordable and starter prices. Additionally, the site will see new parks and landscaping to boost the overall aesthetic character of the area.
