South Oxhey Playing Fields & Prestwick Road
This part of town is a quiet Watford suburb, in the Watford Rural parish located in the Three Rivers district of Hertfordshire. This neighbourhood area includes part of Oxhey, South Oxhey and Watford. Local residents are blessed to play in their local South Oxhey Playing Fields, and Carpenders Park where local sport teams also gather. This neighbourhood also has a local Library, Oxhey Library, which was renovated in September 2009 and where people can borrow books or study quietly. From South Oxhey it would take residents around 1 hour to get a train into London Euston, with a similar travel time to drive.
Carpenders Park was originally an estate around the Carpender Park manor house. The land on the manor was later turned into a girls school, which was demolished in 1960. The site was then used for the US Airforce, but was also demolished in the late 1990s. Most of the houses in Carpenders Park were built from the 1930s. Carpenders Park comes under the Three Rivers District and is a ward of its own.
Famous British ventriloquist, Roger De Courcey who is known for performing with Nookie Bear, lived on the Carpenders Park estate. Cheslyn House and Gardens, comprises 3.5 acres of beautifully designed gardens and woodlands, is a Green Flag Award winning space, making it a key local community asset. Carpenders Park ticket office was set to close to cut costs, but a petition raised by local residents succeeded in stopping in the motion in 2019.
A £425,000 Heritage Lottery Fund project will see the redevelopment of the Watford Museum. Watford Town Hall and the Colosseum, a much loved event venue, have both received funding for refurbishment. The Town Hall redevelopment will also include a multi-storey office block and expanded car park.
