South Parsons Green & Putney Bridge

This affluent Parsons Green neighbourhood sits along the River Thames, just south of Fulham. Over the years, the area has attracted many wealthier London families and young professionals. The streets are lined with trees as well as large Victorian houses as well as some council flats, and even though it’s only a short trip into central London from nearby Putney Bridge station, locals are eager to stay put on their days off. They can be found picnicking in South Park or jogging through Hurlingham Park, enjoying the neighbourhood’s peaceful west London energy. Others will be packed into River Cafe for their long weekend breakfasts or at The Eight Bells catching up over a pint or two. With all that the area has to offer, it’s easy to see why so many property developers are looking for ways to further invest in the neighbourhood.

This area’s bridge dates back to 1642 when the Earl of Essex constructed a temporary crossing for troops. Later on, in 1729 - a permanent bridge was built - with 26 arches. At the time, it was the only Thames crossing from the City to Kingston. The bridge was replaced in 1886 with one made out of Cornish granite, and was even equipped with its own aqueduct. Around this time, Putney Bridge station opened and served as the terminus of the Metropolitan Railway’s West Brompton Branch. This led to greater development in the area. Today, the neighbourhood is the starting point for the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race - a tradition that’s been ongoing since 1845.

The Hurlingham Club, now a private members’ club, was once the headquarters of Polo for the entire British Empire. In the 1940s, the grounds were purchased by the London County Council in order to build housing for those displaced in the Second World War.

The crime rates throughout the entire borough - Hammersmith and Fulham - are unfortunately higher than the averages throughout London. Luckily, this specific part of the borough is on the safer side. Most of the crimes reported there tend to be non- violent theft incidents.

There are multiple new housing developments in the neighbourhood. Berkeley Homes just recently completed the Hurlingham Gate development, which brings 13 beautiful townhouses to the neighbourhood. Bishops Gate is also a newly finished development. It consists of luxury apartments and townhouses. The area on the other side of the bridge, in the borough of Wandsworth, has also been receiving a great of attention from developers as of late.
