South Sutton & East Belmont

This neighbourhood borders areas such as Croydon to its North East, Kingston to its North West, and Merton to its North. Sutton residents have the benefit of being surrounded by public green spaces, which is rare compared to some inner-city London Boroughs. The area is entrenched in cultural history dating back to 675 A.D, making the area a hit amongst tourists. Sutton High Street has a mixture of local and international pubs, restaurants, and shops. This neighbourhood area may lack the frequency of inner city London bus routes, but it has its fair share of rail stations. It also has Brighton road, and as its name suggests, it cuts through Sutton all the way to the sea side resort of Brighton.

Sutton’s history dates back to 675 A.D: Neolithic artefacts have been found in this locality. Sutton was originally known as “Sudtone” meaning Southtown in Anglo-Saxon, to represent the wealthy Sutton family that rose to prominence in England during the 13th century. The area was under the administration of Chertey Abbey, also known as the Benedictine Abbey of St. Peter, from 666 A.D. Sutton remained under Chertey Abbey until 1538, when King Henry VIII compulsorily purchased it during The Dissolution of the Monasteries, in a move to steer away from Roman Catholicism and towards Anglicanism. In the 1960s, London started to expand and absorb local towns into its administration. This culminated in 1965 with the Greater London Council bringing Sutton into London, thus establishing the London Borough of Sutton.

Sutton was the first area in the UK to welcome the famous chain of bars, All Bar One, which opened its taps to the nation in 1994.

Sutton has two prisons, HMP High Down and HMP Downview. The location of these prisons within a residential area is generally a cause for contention; however, residents enjoy the many other benefits that Sutton has to offer, and hence many don’t mind that they are situated so close to the prisons.

Harris Academy Sutton, run by the Harris Federation, opened in September 2018 on the site of the former Sutton Hospital. The school runs classes from Year 7 to Year 11 and won in 2022 he prestigious RIBA Regional London Award and RIBA London Sustainability Award. The academy is part of the London Cancer Hub (LCH) campus, based in Belmont, Sutton next to the Royal Marsden Hospital and the Institute for Cancer Research, London. The concentration of specialist medical services in the area is also core characteristic that explains the borough aims to regenerate the area through a new London Cancer Hub initiative aimed for 2035. Though concrete plans have not been announced, the significant role that medical services plays in the area is definitely noteworthy. There are also plans to regenerate the Benhill Estate, with the latest consultation session with locals being held in October 2022.
