South West Enfield
This neighbourhood sits on the border between Bush Hill and Winchmore. Nestled in the green suburban sprawl of Enfield, it’s no surprise that the area attracts many families. When wandering through the tree lined streets that are full of large but relatively affordable Edwardian Tudor-style houses, it’s easy to understand the draw. A typical weekend day will find residents playing rounds at Bush Hill Park Golf Club, strolling along Salmon’s Brook, or jogging along the New River past the iconic Clarendon Arch. A dream for athletes and lovers of the great outdoors, there are also ways to stay active in the neighbourhood throughout those cold winter months. During that time, locals turn to the community-oriented Hazelwood Sports Club which even offers tennis and squash courts. Despite being a quiet suburb, this part of town has plenty to offer!
Bush Hill was originally an estate that was acquired by Sir Hugh Myddelton in 1609. By 1650 though, his heirs had sold the estate. His former home, Bush Hill House, was eventually refurbished in the 1850s so that it could be leased to Samuel Cunard, local shipping magnate. Later on, following the First World War, housing development picked up in the area, with many of the houses being built centred around the idyllic New River. The council also contributed to much of the housing supply during this time. A good portion of those flats still exist today.
During the Second World War, Bush Hill Park Golf Club was repurposed for the war effort. Its clubhouse ended up being leased to the Anti-Aircraft Brigade. This led to anti-glider ditches being dug throughout the courses.
Unfortunately, this part of Winchmore does not have its own rail station. However, the area is still serviced by bus lines. Additionally, residents don’t tend to mind the quick drive or walk to any of the neighbouring stations as its distance from them help maintain its rural feel.
While this has typically been a sleepy London suburb, with more families discovering the beauty of north London, developers have begun looking for more ways to invest in the area. The New River View development is currently the only significant project currently underway in the area. Sitting slightly north of this postcode, at 794 Green Lanes, the development comprises 91 one, two and three-bedroom apartments.
