St Albans South

Nestled between Hemel Hempstead and Welwyn Garden City, sits the ancient cathedral city of St Albans, Hertfordshire. Now a vital commuter belt community owing to its proximity to London and major road networks, St Albans’ history dates back to at least the first century, making it one of the oldest settlements in the whole of the UK, at over 2,000 years old! Nowadays the housing and developmental market in St Albans is constricted by the conservation area, and so most of the development occurs in the outer reaches of the town. The housing stock in this city varies from inner-city suburban town houses, new-builds, and large-scale period suburban builds; ranging from £600,000 to £1.5 million!

St Albans history dates back to the Celtic tribe Catuvellauni, who originally settled in the area in the first century, and was known Verlamion. It was then, in 50 AD, named Verulamium by the Roman’s, and developed as a thriving city during Roman Britain. This thriving ciuty gathered the attention of Boudica of the Iceni, and in 60 AD, Verulamium was razed and sacked by the tribe. St Albans then began its long-standing association with Saint Alban, the first-recorded British Christian martyr in history, who lived in Verulamium and was venerated into the Catholic canon as a saint. St Albans Cathedral now sits on the supposed site of Alban’s resting place, and was founded around the 8th century. Since this period, St Albans has developed as a vital market-town and a centre for trade across Hertfordshire.

St Albans is also home to one of the oldest schools in the world, St Albans School, founded in 948 AD! Now a private school that is male-only until sixth form, St Albans has some famous alumni, including physicist Stephen Hawking!

Due to its incredibly old history and heritage, St Albans is filled with conservation areas and listed properties; which mean that development across this line is faced with strict guidance and measures in order to be approved or accepted. In the St Albans South region, however, there has been more development over recent years, and the property market towards the neighbourhood of St Stephens tends to have a lower price point, ranging from £500,000 - £600,000!
